George Airport is situated 7.8 Km (4.8 Mi) from the town of George which is a city in South Africa’s Western Cape province. It is a relatively small but busy and efficient enterprise. George Airport (FAGG) was built in 1977 as an exact replica of Keetmanshoop Airport in Namibia. The refinery's flares are a normal and vital part of keeping the refinery running safely and works in the same way as a home gas heater – a pilot light burns constantly igniting any gas that is sent to a flare. ![]() Thirty years ago there was a permanent flame over Fawley – the 'Fawley Flame' – but is now a comparatively rare event. The refinery stacks can be seen for miles around. Its mile long jetty handles some 2,500 ships movements a year. The oil is off-loaded at the Refinery's Marine Terminal (Module 2) the largest in Europe. The refinery imports crude oil from around the world, including the Middle East and Russia, although the majority of the crude oil comes from the North Sea. On the seaward side of the complex lie the salt marshes, whilst on the landward side an extensive tree screen surrounds one of the biggest and most complex oil refining and petrochemical manufacturing sites in Europe, namely, 'Esso Petroleum Company & Exxon Mobile Chemical Limited’.
